Real Wealth Isn’t About the Money

Ppersonal finance is not my sexiest topic. I know it matters, I know I should pay more attention to it, and I know that the conventional conversation around it makes me want to take a nap.

Which is exactly why I loved talking to Chris Luger.

Chris is the voice behind Heavy Metal Money, and his whole deal is turning the volume up on financial independence — not as a rigid, joyless, rice-and-beans-for-a-decade slog, but as the ultimate tool for building a life that actually gives you options. He didn’t figure any of this out at 22 with a perfectly structured portfolio. He figured it out at 38, in the middle of a divorce, starting essentially from scratch.

And that’s why his take resonates — because it’s real.

The thing he said that landed hardest for me: when you’re not dependent on a paycheck to survive, everything changes. The decisions you make about your career, your relationships, your time — all of it shifts. You stop tolerating things you shouldn’t tolerate. You start choosing who you work with. The real wealth, he said, isn’t the money. It’s the time.

He also introduced me to something called FILE — Financial Independence, Live Early. Not retire early, live early. Which is a distinction I think a lot of us need. Because the goal was never to stop doing things. It was to start doing the right things, on our own terms, without waiting until we’re 62 and a half to give ourselves permission.

The practical starting point? Just track where the money goes. That’s it. Not a complicated budget overhaul, not extreme couponing, not scorched earth sacrifice. Just write it down and see what’s actually happening. Most people are shocked.

And then — know your why. Because there will be hard months, and the why is what keeps you going.

Financial freedom so you can live life early. That sounds a lot like No More Mondays to me.
