I’ll just say it: I walked away from my conversation with Steve Woodruff wanting to completely redo my introduction.
And I’ve been doing this for a while.
Steve is the King of Clarity — and yes, he actually goes by that, and yes, he’s earned it. His whole body of work sits on one deceptively simple premise: confusion loses, and clarity wins. Most of the time when we struggle to communicate — in a pitch, on a podcast, in a networking conversation, even with our partners at home — it’s not that we have a messaging problem. It’s that we haven’t gotten clear enough ourselves.
The thing that hit me hardest was this idea he calls the curse of knowledge. When you’ve been immersed in something for years, you start to assume that everyone else cares about it as much as you do — or already understands as much as you do. So you either dump everything on people at once, or you leave out critical context because it feels obvious to you. Either way, you lose them.
The antidote? Memory darts.
A memory dart is a single, vivid thought packaged in a way that turns the light on fast. Not everything you know. Not your full credentials. Just the one thing that makes people go — wait, tell me more. Steve’s is “King of Clarity.” Mine, apparently, is “former engineer who loves people.” Neither of us planned them. Both of them work, because they’re true, they’re specific, and they open a door instead of slamming one shut.
What I love most about Steve’s framework is that it’s not about being clever or creative or memorable for its own sake. It’s about being human. When you show up as a whole person — with a story, with a twist, with an actual “then this happened” moment — you give everyone in the room permission to do the same. And that’s when real conversations start.
So here’s your homework: I started here → then this happened → now I’m doing this → here’s where I’m heading. Four sentences. That’s your story. That’s your introduction. That’s the beginning of every conversation worth having.
